Design of a High Index Contrast Arrayed Waveguide Grating

Arrayed waveguide gratings are useful structures for the implementation of wavelength division multiplexing; however, in their current form, silica-based gratings are too large to be made cheaply or to use as an integrated component. This paper describes a Master of Engineering thesis which will attempt to design such a structure which is at least one order of magnitude smaller than the best ones which have been designed previously. The design will make use of high index contrast waveguides in order to reduce the radius of waveguide bends, currently the limiting factor in grating size.
